Figures relating the largest aerospace conference in Europe beat records and consist a hopeful sign for an event which will be essential for engineers and scientists in this field.

Just a month before the School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y del Espacio, ETSIAE) from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) becomes a forum for exchange of knowledge on scientific and aerospace engineering developments by hosting the EUCASS 2019 conference (European Conference for Aeronautics and Space Sciences), the Local Organising Committee takes stock of what it has been achieved to fulfil the expectations of a demanding audience such as those attending this event which has been going around Europe since 2005.

“Since its beginning in Moscow in 2005, the EUCASS Conference has been growing and evolving to become not only the European reference in the aerospace field, but also the second worldwide behind SCITECH in the USA", explains Rodrigo Martínez-Val, professor at ETSIAE and president of the Local Organising Committee.

In 2019 edition to be held next month in Spain, the eighth, an absolute record has been achieved and the scientific and engineering community have become interested in taking part of it. More than 1,100 papers have been received, of which 850 have finally been accepted. Among these, 730 will be oral presentations and 120 will be poster presentations.

However, as Professor Martínez-Val acknowledges, the objective of the local organising committee was not only to achieve a large number of high-quality papers, but also to draw the attention of Spanish engineers and researchers, achieving a deep impact on their part, "since Spanish participation has been scarce in previous editions”. Taking into account recorded figures, this initial target has been successfully fulfiled since the Spanish participation has increased tenfold, from 10 to 20 papers in previous conferences to be the country with the highest number of submitted papers, reaching 160. Besides, China has been the second country regarding submitted papers, with 130 and, the third place is for France, Russia or Germany with approximately 100 papers each.

The seven main topics to be addressed in EUCASS 2019 are: System Integration; Flight Physics; Structures and Materials; Flight Dynamics/GNC (Guidance, Navigation and Control) and Avionics; Propulsion Physics; Conference on Reusable Systems for Space Access and Workshop on In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU).

Papers will be presented in 16 parallel sessions, morning and afternoon, which will promote an environment of ongoing exchange of ideas, where the state of the art in Aeronautical Engineering will be analysed. It will also allow to make emphasis on promising innovations, establishing synergies between the academy and industry, leading to future international and cross-disciplinary projects.

Likewise, PhD students will be able to be in contact with senior researchers very experienced in the aerospace field. “Our students have seen the opportunity of having an event of this nature in their own university and they will be really active participants," the Local Organising Committee explained. Those registered as students also have the possibility of being distinguished with the Best Student Paper Award.

Conference Complementary Activities
Together with Professor Martínez-Val, the organizing committee is made up of: Manuel Rodríguez, Javier Crespo Moreno, Alfredo Güemes, Cristina Cuerno, Gustavo Alonso, Eusebio Valero and Alejandro Sánchez, professors at ETSIAE; Eduardo Ahedo, professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid; Javier Gómez Elvira, INTA; Miguel Angel Morell, Airbus; and Luis Rodríguez Gil and José Garrido González, both from Sociedad Aeronáutica Española.

All of them look after the congress to have not only the expected technical level but also a smooth logistic development. It is estimated that 800 to 900 people will attend the conference besides ETSIAE daily activity at a facility which is being fully adapted to host the event. In fact, EUCASS Local Organising Committee chose ETSIAE as an ideal location for celebrating this new edition, among other five candidate cities.

In addition to the mentioned papers and posters, companies and sponsoring entities (CNES, Ariane Group, ITP Aero, DLR and Hispasat) will have an exhibition area where they will display the appropriate material to show attendees their areas of activity. “EUCASS should be considered by the companies to be a great platform to present their work, not only during this edition but also in the future," explained the members of the local committee.

Another opportunity that attendees will enjoy is the possibility of undertaking technical visits (the day after the conference) to companies and research centres in the aerospace sector located within the Community of Madrid and its surroundings. Finally, tourist will be offered daily tours to the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Royal Site of San Lorenzo del Escorial agreed with National Heritage (every day).
